When is a business card not a business card?
When it goes beyond expectations or serves a completely different function than the old idea of a business card being a means of conveyance for business contact-info.
Yesterday I finished up a design for a card (above) that would be serving as an event ticket for a party thrown by 3 Smart Girlz. One side reads "Admit 1" and the other lists the time, date, etc.. Nothing unusual about the info but the look and feel was something you're not going to come across too often for a ticket.
That got me thinking - what are some other alternative uses for business cards?
"Buy 10, get 1 free" Punch Cards. Throw in a twist by offering a punch card for a service not usually associated with them such as desserts, lawn care, logo design, pizza, etc.. Consider the worth of a customer's incentive to return 10 times in order to get one free!
Appointment Cards. An appointment backer isn't uncommon for doctors and dentists but what about your business? How often do you hand out a card, hoping that it will lead to a follow-up meeting or phone call? Why not schedule one right on the spot and leave your client with a reminder?
Social Cards. Business cards are often thought of as a professional's tool but the same idea can be applied to your personal life. Keeping in contact with someone you meet at a party or coffee shop can be as easy as handing out a card with your blog, MySpace, FaceBook, Twitter, instant messenger, etc. info.
Little Gift Certificates. Gift certificates are a great way to gain new clients and get payment well before exchanging services/goods. Why not give out pocket sized certificates that clients are more likely to carry around with them?
Upcoming Events Calendar. Lots of people try to jam tiny 1-year calendars onto the back of business cards in hopes on doubling their usability. What about an easy to read list of your upcoming events such as an open house, holiday closings or sales?
Relevant Extras. Often the back of a business card goes unused. Can you "give away" a little bit of info that your customers might find useful to reference? Recipes, care instructions, tips, log-in info,etc..
"Personal Access" Info. Create a page on your website that is meant to introduce your business to someone you might have recently met. Include some sort of "special offer" or inside info and password protect the page. Put the URL and password info on the back of your card (printed or leave a spot to hand-write it) and give clients the sense that you're "letting them in" on something usually restricted.

Recently I ran across agirl on Etsy who makes and sells little note pads the same size and shape as match books. I grabbed a random business card and fashioned a little matchbook shape. That got me thinking. If I composed my business cards right, I could make those pretty easy, and hand them out. Not matches, but notepads. If I composed a .doc right, I could also put my website address on it. So When I gave away one, I'd be giving away....15-25 business cards to one person, and THEY would be giving out 15-25 of my little notes with stuff scribbled on it. IF I also offered a one-time credit to someone responsible for handing out my website, then they'd have incentive to hand them out with a personal recommendation.
That could be really powerful!
